What do I mean by a Round Peg?

If parts of the homepage felt strangely familiar, you may already be wondering:

“Could my child be a Round Peg?”

Perhaps.

A Round Peg is not simply a child who thinks differently.

It is often a child whose way of seeing develops faster than their ability to explain what they see, and faster than the adults around them can recognise it.

That gap is where many misunderstandings begin.

The Round Peg gap

One of the simplest ways I can explain it is this.

Many children may work through a problem like this:

A → B → C → D → E

The steps are followed one after another and can usually be retraced.

A Round Peg may sometimes appear to move like this:

A → E

But that does not necessarily mean B, C and D are missing.

They may have been compressed.

The child may have seen several relationships as one whole idea rather than experienced them as separate steps.

That becomes a problem when we ask:

“How did you get from A to E?”

and the child cannot unpack what happened in between.

So what looks like missing thinking may sometimes be thinking that has already been compressed.

The thinking may be compressed before the explaining is developed.

This is why I find it useful to separate three things.

1. What the child can SEE

A Round Peg may notice a pattern, relationship, structure, equivalence, logic or possible route very quickly.

Sometimes they do not experience their thinking as a neat sequence of steps.

They simply see how things fit together.

They may also prefer to explore and discover rather than memorise.

Give them a procedure with no meaning behind it and some may disengage.

Give them something to uncover or make sense of and you may see a very different child.

This can even happen with a question they have solved before.

Instead of asking: “What method did I use last time?”

they may instinctively ask: “What can I see in this problem now?”

That is why they may solve a similar problem differently the next time.

Not because the new way is always better.

But because they are responding to what they see rather than simply retrieving a stored procedure.

2. What the child can EXPLAIN

This may be much less developed.

Ask: “How did you know?”

and you may hear:

“I don't know.”

“It's obvious.”

“I just know.”

That does not prove the child understood.

But neither does it prove there was no thinking.

Sometimes the child's ability to see has moved ahead of their ability to make what they see visible to someone else.

3. What the adult can RECOGNISE

Parents and teachers cannot see what happened inside the child's head.

We only see what the child writes, says or shows.

So the mismatch can be:

What the child can see ≠ what the child can explain ≠ what the adult can recognise.

That is where misunderstanding begins.

An unexpected method may look unjustified.

Missing steps may look like missing thinking.

Resistance may look like unwillingness when the child is actually struggling to see the logic or purpose.

And sometimes the adult is right.

The child may have guessed.

The reasoning may be incomplete.

The method may simply be wrong.

Which is why the answer is neither automatic praise nor automatic correction.

Understand before correcting.

What should we do when the thinking is invisible?

Become curious before becoming certain.

Ask:

What did you notice?

Why did that make sense to you?

Can you show me what happened in your head?

What happened between A and E?

Would your idea still work if the question changed?

Where might it stop working?

The aim is to uncover enough of the thinking to know what we are dealing with.

If the idea is sound, develop it.

If it is incomplete, build the missing reasoning.

If it is wrong, correct it.

If the child cannot explain, help them unpack the compressed steps.

The goal is not simply to make the child write more.

It is to help them learn how to make what they saw visible to someone else.

The square hole still matters.

The square hole is not the teacher.

It is not the school.

It represents the common system children are expected to work within;

standard methods, clear workings, expected sequences, shared language, classroom routines and assessment requirements.

Children need these.

The goal is not to remove the square holes.

It is to help the child navigate them without first having to become square.

The Round Peg is not a failed Square Peg.

It simply has a different shape.

Preserve the seeing. Build the explaining.

This is the central idea behind Round Peg Parents.

Because I have seen what can happen when we do the opposite.

A child may begin by trusting what they see.

They try their own way.

They ask why.

They explore.

They derive.

They may even solve the same kind of problem differently the next time because they are looking at the problem again rather than simply retrieving a method.

But after enough correction, they can begin to learn a different lesson.

“Don't do it that way.”

“Use the method you were taught.”

“Show the steps properly.”

“Just remember this.”

Over time, some children stop trusting their own way of seeing.

They become more cautious about trying another route.

They stop asking: “What can I see?”

and begin asking: “Which method am I supposed to use?”

That is the loss I worry about most.

Not because standard methods are bad.

Children need them.

But because the child may gradually come to believe that waiting to be shown is safer than trying to understand.

And once that happens, something valuable can be lost.

What I want is not less teaching.

Not less correction.

Not fewer methods.

I want us to be more careful about what we are correcting away.

Add explanation without removing insight.

Add rigour without removing curiosity.

Add methods without replacing the child's instinct to look, question and derive.

The aim is not to preserve every unusual answer.

It is to preserve the child's willingness to see for themselves while helping them become increasingly able to explain, verify and communicate what they see.

I want the child to move from: “I just know.”

to: “This is what I saw.”

then: “This is what happened between A and E.”

then: “This is why it works.”

and eventually: I know when this idea works, when it doesn't, and how to explain it to someone else.”

That is how seeing becomes dependable thinking.

Preserve the seeing. Build the explaining.

And this is why: The goal is not freedom from methods.

It is freedom from helpless dependence on methods.

So, could your child be a Round Peg?

Perhaps.

Round Peg is not a diagnosis, and I do not think parents need to rush to label their children.

Observe instead.

Notice how your child approaches unfamiliar problems.

Notice what happens when something does not make sense.

Notice whether they prefer deriving to memorising.

Notice what happens when they meet a familiar problem again.

Do they simply repeat the method?

Or do they begin looking again?

Listen when they say:

“I have another way.”

“But why?”

“It doesn't make sense.”

“I just know.”

Do not assume these are signs of something remarkable.

But do not dismiss them either.

Look for the thinking underneath.

Over time, the pattern will tell you far more than any single behaviour.

This is where we begin.

If you recognise some of this, the next step is not to decide what label fits your child.

It is to become better at seeing how they think.
