Discover how your child see patterns and mathematical structures before explaining them.

Some children see the world differently and struggle to explain what they see.

They may arrive at an answer without the workings adults expect.

They may notice where something belongs when nobody else has noticed.

They may find another way to solve a problem.

They may question or resist something when they cannot see the logic behind it.

They may refuse to memorise what they do not understand, switch off when learning feels abstract or meaningless, yet become surprisingly engaged when the same idea is presented through a real problem that gives them a reason to think.

And sometimes, what looks like a learning problem is not simply a lack of ability.

It may be a mismatch between what the child can see and what the adults around them can understand.

What worries me is not one wrong answer.

It is what can happen over years when a capable child repeatedly learns that the way they see, think or solve does not fit what is expected.

A child who once looked at a problem and wondered: “What can I see?”

may eventually learn to ask only: “Which method am I supposed to use?”

That is the loss I want to help prevent.

I know this because I raised one.

Long before I ever used the term Round Peg, I was already noticing something unusual in one of my sons.

When he was about two, he removed the tyres from all his toy cars.

What surprised me was not the dismantling.

It was that he knew which tyre belonged to which car.

Then, when he was around four, my father once picked up a small part from the floor and wondered aloud where it had come from.

My young son immediately said it was a part from our vacuum cleaner.

My father hadn't recognised it.

The little boy had.

Again, what stayed with me was not simply that he remembered an object.

He appeared to recognise: this part belongs to that whole.

He noticed relationships.

He saw where things fitted.

At that age, these were delightful little moments.

I did not know then that the same way of seeing could later make learning both surprisingly easy at times and surprisingly difficult at others.

Being capable did not always mean doing well in school.

One day, the child does something that makes you think: “There. That's the child I know.”

They grasp a difficult idea quickly.

They see a relationship others have missed.

They solve something in an unexpected way.

They can sometimes perform exceptionally well.

Then, on another day, the same child can fail badly at something that appears much easier.

They rush.

They miss something obvious.

They don't show enough working.

They lose focus.

They cannot explain an answer they seemed to understand.

Or they disengage because they cannot see the logic, relevance or purpose behind what they have been asked to learn.

Their performance can vary in ways that simply do not reflect what you know they are capable of.

And gradually, labels begin to appear:

Careless.

Inconsistent.

Undisciplined.

Stubborn.

Not listening.

Sometimes even classmates begin to see them as the awkward one, the child who does things differently or somehow makes learning more complicated than it needs to be.

Yet sometimes the child is not refusing to learn.

They are resisting learning without understanding.

They may struggle to memorise a procedure when they cannot see why it works.

They may switch off when something feels abstract or purposeless.

Yet place that same idea inside a meaningful real-world problem and they can suddenly come alive.

Now there is something to figure out.

A reason to think.

For the child, school can become frustrating.

For the teacher, the child can be difficult to understand.

And for the parent, it can feel helpless.

Because you have seen what your child can do.

Yet the marks, schoolwork and behaviour others see may tell a completely different story.

You begin wondering:

Why can he solve the hard question but make such a silly mistake on the easy one?

Why won't he memorise something everyone else seems able to accept?

Why does he always need to know why?

Why can't he just follow the steps?

And perhaps the hardest question:

Am I helping my child by protecting the way he thinks, or am I making school even harder for him?

But the saddest part may come much later.

Many Round Peg children begin with confidence in what they notice.

They try another route.

They make connections.

They ask why.

They say: “I think I can do it this way.”

But imagine hearing repeatedly:

“That's not the method.”

“Stop taking shortcuts.”

“Show the proper working.”

“Just memorise it.”

“You don't need to know why.”

“Just follow what you were taught.”

At first, the child may argue.

That can earn another label: stubborn.

Then perhaps they argue less.

They stop offering their unusual method.

They stop asking why.

They become quieter.

They wait to be shown.

And eventually, instead of approaching a problem thinking: “What can I see?”

they begin thinking: “Which teacher's method should I use?”

That, to me, is the saddest loss.

Not because children should not learn standard methods. They should.

Not because memorisation has no place. It does.

The loss is when a child who once naturally searched for meaning and relationships learns that waiting to be shown is safer than trying to understand for themselves.

The gift may still be there.

The child may simply have stopped trusting it.

What I first noticed in my son, I later began seeing in many other children.

Over more than 20 years, I have worked with more than 10,000 children across very different ability levels.

Again and again, I recognised children whose visible performance did not fully reflect what they were capable of.

Some could see relationships others missed.

Some reached answers in ways they could not yet explain.

Some performed brilliantly in one situation and poorly in another.

Some resisted learning that made no sense to them, yet became deeply engaged when the same idea was presented in a meaningful way.

What troubled me was not that these children thought differently.

It was how easily that difference could be misunderstood.

A teacher might see missing steps where I saw a child who had already compressed part of the reasoning.

A parent might see stubbornness where I saw a child searching for logic.

An inconsistent result might be taken as evidence of weak ability, even when the child's thinking told a very different story.

And when this happened repeatedly, the child could begin to believe those interpretations too.

That is what stayed with me.

The problem was often not that these children could not think. It was that the adults around them could not always recognise the thinking they were seeing.

And now, I think I may be seeing it again.

My granddaughter is three.

That is far too young for me to decide what kind of learner she will eventually become.

But I am beginning to notice little things that feel strangely familiar.

She is unusually observant about how things fit and where they belong.

Recently, I watched her pick up an audio cable and place the plug into a small, unobvious recess designed simply to hold it safely when it was not being used.

Nobody showed her.

She seemed to have noticed what that little structure was for.

When I play games with her, she does not always simply accept the way I tell her to play.

Sometimes she seems more interested in working out a logic of her own.

Even when she arranges and keeps her toys, I notice patterns in the way she organises them.

These may turn out to be nothing more than interesting behaviours of a curious three-year-old.

But they make me pause.

Because I have seen something similar before.

In her father.

And this time I know what may come later.

I know how easily capability can be hidden behind inconsistent performance.

I know how quickly a child who keeps asking “why?” can become “stubborn”.

I know the frustration when the child you know and the child school appears to see seem like two different people.

And I know what can happen when, after years of correction, a child eventually stops trusting what they see.

I don't want my granddaughter to go through that if she really is a Round Peg.

I want her to enjoy learning.

I want her to learn the methods she needs, develop discipline and communicate clearly.

But I also want her to retain the confidence to ask why, notice what nobody has pointed out to her, derive an idea of her own and ask: “What can I see?”

That is why I am writing now.

Why do I call them Round Pegs?

We all know the expression: a round peg in a square hole.

I use Round Peg for a child whose way of noticing, reasoning or solving does not always fit neatly into the form a learning system understandably needs.

The square hole is not the teacher.

And it is not the school.

It is the structure schooling requires: standard methods, visible working, expected sequences, common ways of explaining and consistent ways of assessing.

We need these things.

The square hole is not the enemy.

The problem begins when fitting the expected form becomes more important than understanding what the child actually saw.

A Round Peg is not a failed Square Peg.

It simply has a different shape.

The goal is not to remove the square hole.

It is to help the Round Peg navigate it successfully without surrendering what makes them round.

Perhaps you recognise one too.

Maybe your child:

says “I just know” but cannot tell you how they know;

finds a method nobody taught;

spots relationships or shortcuts before learning the formal method;

solves a difficult problem but makes an astonishing mistake on something simple;

performs exceptionally well one day and badly another;

needs considerable coaxing to begin but learns rapidly once engaged;

questions or resists things when they cannot see the logic behind them;

dislikes memorising rules or procedures they do not understand;

switches off when learning feels abstract or purposeless;

becomes deeply engaged when the same idea appears inside a meaningful real-world problem;

prefers deriving something for themselves rather than simply being told what to remember;

sees something that seems obvious to them but remains invisible to everyone else.

 

Perhaps you have wondered: “Why is my child like this?”

Or perhaps you have heard:

“He is capable, but…”

“She could do much better if…”

“He just needs to follow instructions.”

“She needs to stop doing things her own way.”

If several of the patterns above feel familiar, your child may be what I call a Round Peg.

Not because there is something wrong with them.

But because the way they notice, reason, engage and make sense of learning may not always fit neatly into the way learning is usually expected to happen.

And before asking: “Why won't my child just do it the expected way?”

perhaps the more useful question is: “What is my child seeing, or trying to make sense of?”

Preserve the seeing. Build the explaining.

If the child sees something valuable, preserve it.

If their reasoning has gaps, build them.

If something is obvious inside their mind but invisible to everyone else, help them learn to bring us into what they see.

The goal is not: “Do whatever you like because you think differently.”

Nor is it: “Stop thinking that way and follow the method.”

Help the child move from: “I just know.”

to: “This is what I saw.”

then: “This is why it works.”

and eventually: “I know when and how to use it again.”

Preserve the seeing. Build the explaining.

I am writing for the adults around these children.

For parents, because you often see a child that grades, worksheets and school reports cannot fully capture.

And for educators, because what looks like carelessness, stubbornness, weak discipline or refusal to follow may sometimes have thinking underneath it that has not yet become visible.

The aim is not to excuse the behaviour.

It is to understand it well enough to know what to build without accidentally collapsing what is already valuable

This time, I want to understand earlier.

I cannot know yet whether my three-year-old granddaughter will grow up to be a Round Peg.

But if she does, I do not want her to have to lose the way she naturally sees before the adults around her understand it.

And I don't want other children to have to go through that either.

That is why I am writing now.

I have already watched one generation of Round Pegs struggle to fit into systems that did not always understand them.

I do not want to watch the next generation go through the same process.

I want parents to recognise what may be happening earlier.

I want educators to understand these children before labels become conclusions.

And I want Round Peg children to learn how to navigate the square holes they will inevitably meet.

Not to make the square holes disappear.

But to help Round Pegs navigate them without losing what makes them round.

Because a round peg is not necessarily a defective square peg.

Sometimes, it simply has a different shape.
